How to Calibrate a VX Nexus unit so it can be used indoors

How to do a calibration session with VX Nexus

For VX Sport units to produce the most accurate data when being used indoors, the athlete/s using the device must first complete a calibration session outside using GPS as a reference.

The calibration session is a one-time event required for each athlete who will be using the units indoors. The calibration session only takes 10-15 minutes to complete. The calibration data gets saved to the athlete’s profile in the VX Nexus app – not to the actual unit. So, if the athlete uses a different unit for a session, then their calibration data will get written to the device when the unit gets issued to them before the session.

To start a calibration, issue the unit/s to the correct athlete/s and change the sport to Indoor Calibration. For a calibration session you don’t want, or need the live receiver to show the session in real time – this is because the data will need to be extracted to the app through the Manage Units page instead of recorded in real-time.

Once you have reissued the unit to Indoor Calibration (shown above) you are ready to run the calibration session. The calibration session should be done on a field, away from tall buildings or trees so the units can get a good GPS connection. The unit should be turned on outside in the middle of the field so it can get a strong connection to GPS – it is best to leave the unit alone and not move it while it is getting connected, it is best to leave it for 20-30 minutes to get a good, strong connection.

After the unit has a good GPS connection you can place it in the athlete’s vest – it is very important to make sure it is in the correct orientation inside the VX Sport vest (USB port facing up and LED lights facing away from the athlete wearing the device). You can have the athletes complete their warmup while the Nexus units are connecting to GPS.

The calibration session needs to include a large contribution of high intensity running above 15km/h (9mph), with athletes also reaching at least 90% of their max speed within the session. If there's not enough high-speed running, plus a full range of the athlete's speeds, you may get an inaccurate indoor calibration.

Recommended calibration session below.

  • 6 x sprints over 60m – after each sprint, the athlete should gently come to a stop, turn around and walk back to the start
  • 1 x 100m shuttle at 80% max speed (0-50-0) – run 50m, stop, turn and run back
  • 1 x 200m shuttle at 70% max speed (0-100-0) - run 100m, stop, turn and run back
  • 1 x 100m shuttle at 60% max speed (0-50-0) - run 50m, stop, turn and run back
  • 1 x 200m shuttle at 50% max speed (0-100-0) - run 100m, stop, turn and run back
  • 1 x 200m shuttle at walking speed (0-100-0) - run 100m, stop, turn and run back

Rest periods between each of the above can be as long as the athlete needs.

As soon as the sprints and shuttles have been completed by the athlete you need to take the unit out of the athlete’s vest and turn it off.

To complete the calibration process you now need to download the session to the VX Nexus iPad app. You do this by connecting the unit to power so it will show up on the manage device page in the app. Make sure the correct team’s name is showing at the top left and wait for the unit to get a Bluetooth connection to the app by turning green and showing the memory and battery indicator. You then need to select the unit/s and press the blue extract button that will download the session to the iPad. It will then pop up a window for you to select the session and save it; you do not need to trim or split the calibration session, just save it and leave it.

The pic below shows the correct team name at the top left, the unit is fully connected to the app as it is highlighted green with the battery and memory indicator showing, the unit has been selected, and there is the blue extract/download button at the top right.

The below window will pop up after the extract/download button has been pressed. Tick the sessions you want to extract to the app and press Save.

The calibration data will now be calculated and saved to the athlete’s profile in the VX Nexus app. Their calibration data from this session will now be used to calculate their data when they are using a VX Nexus unit indoors.

After the session has been saved you need to reissue the unit back to an Indoor sport, so it is no longer issued to Indoor Calibration. When it is issued back to an Indoor Sport you will see a tick under Indoor which shows the athlete has completed a successful calibration session – you can see this in the pic below too. You may need to first click on the athlete for this to show correctly. If a tick does not show here after saving a calibration session then the calibration was unsuccessful.

Note: The extract/download feature can be used for any session to save data to the app where you don’t use the live receiver. It is not just for calibration sessions only.
